"a little gem of a place" - Western Morning News. We tell the story of Exmouth and its people.

Exhibits include a 1940s Sitting Room, a Victorian Kitchen, Wartime, the Beach, Children's Toys, Railways, Shipping, Antique Lace, the Post Office, Schools, World War II in Exmouth, cigarette cards and Commemorative China. For the children we have Quiz Sheets and our popular 'Find the Cat' trail. Exmouth Museum was first opened in 1985 and is housed in a 19th century building which was the council stables together with the adjoining foreman's cottage. We unfortunately have limited access for wheel chairs and only one gallery is at present accessible. Future plans include improving this situation.

  • Clock Tower

The clock tower was erected to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign and stands prominently on the seafront. The clock was wound by hand by a Council employee but the mechanism was replaced and the original movement is now on display and working in the Museum.

  • Exmouth Docks

Memories of a Happy Holiday: Exmouth Docks, Devon by H. F. Morley Date painted: 1955 Tempera on card, 14.5 x 25 cm

  • EXMOUTH'S V.C.s

Rex Warneford won the Victoria Cross for being the first pilot to shoot down a Zeppelin. Richard Sandford was a Submarine commander in the First World War and won a Victoria Cross for the daring raid on Zeebrugge in 1918. See their stories at the Museum.

  • Clapps Cafe

Situated on the corner of Rolle Street and the Strand Gardens this was a favourite meeting place for Exmothians. Alas, a Mobile Phone shop now occupies the corner premises. Visit the Museum to see more photographs of Exmouth Past and Present.

  • WWI Air Ace

Douglas Carbery learnt to fly on a Royal Aircraft Factory BE 2c. He was credited with shooting down 6 enemy aircraft in WWI. We have a model of the aircraft and photographs taken by Douglas himself of his RFC colleagues and of crashed enemy aircraft.
