The Devon Museums Group, which has commissioned this site with generous funding from MLA South West, is an independent, non-profit-making association supported by Devon County Council. It has represented all the museums in the county for well over a decade and offers valuable support to smaller and voluntary-run museums, enabling them to participate in regional and national policies.
Membership of the Devon Museums Group is entirely free and although it is not essential for a museum to be accredited to join, many members are accredited or are working towards it. However, museums should have collections that are held in trust for the benefit of the community, rather than privately owned.
Meetings are held four times a year at different venues across Devon to discuss matters of mutual interest. Advice and support are freely available to members and there are opportunities to talk to key figures from Devon County Council, MLA South West and the local South West Hub museums, all of whom regularly attend DMG meetings. An annual one-day Forum, usually held in the spring, focuses on a theme of interest to all museums. Training days are regularly arranged by the Devon Museums Group at no, or greatly reduced fees for the benefit of museum staff, volunteers and trustees.
