A History of Crime and Punishment by Princetown Primary School

Education facilities at Dartmoor Prison Museum

The collections at the Museum support education at all levels from primary education to university and lifelong learning.

Resources available

We have displays which illustrate the history of the prison from its inception as a prisoner of war prison. Initially housing prisoners from the Napoleonic wars we then house prisoners from the little explored War of 1812. We map our history as a convict prison from 1850 as a replacement for Transportation to the present day. Aloing the way we also house Conscientious Objectors from the time of the Great War and housed Borstal Boys from 1945 to 1947. Our displays are supplemented by our archive which includes photographs, documents including Governor and Medical Officer Journals and staff and prisoner registers.

Our strengths

We can accommodate group visits and tailor the visit to suit the learning need. A number of our journals have been transcribed which allows a quick check for subject matter and any research is always undertaken using the original documentation. We have worked with local schools to support their learning and have co-curated an exhibition with them whcih was created for us following their visit.

Facilities available

Large car park which can accommodate coaches for group visits and we also have an office which can be used for private study.
