Tiverton has had a large number of pubs over the years. Some of the earliest include the Angel Hotel dating from at least 1612 on Angel Hill, the White Horse on Gold Street 1643, and the Half Moon off Fore Street which was going by 1744 and was a meeting place for combers and weavers.

There are many evocative names which have now disappeared: the Woolpack (Barrington Street), Live and Let Live (Burgesses Court, Heathcoat Square), Vine Tavern (Gold Street), Green Dragon (Leat Street), Old Bow and Quiver, New Bow (both St Peter’s Street), the Boot and the Lower Boot (both West Exe) and the Flower Pott Inn on Water Lane.

Of the earliest pubs, a few are still in operation: the White Horse on Gold Street, the Half Moon (although in a much newer building); the Black Horse (now Twyford Inn) on Bampton Street, 1799; and the Racehorse on Wellbrook Street, 1822.

We would be very eager to hear from you if you have any good stories of any of the Tiverton pubs; are any haunted, have interesting cellars (or tunnels) or any lively characters who were associated with them.
