Exmouth Museum - Working with Schools and Older People
The Museum is in the centre of Exmouth and easily accessible. The Museum is open from the beginning of April to the end of October and tells the story of the town through artefacts, photographs and press cuttings.
Resources available
Displays include a Victorian Kitchen, a Victorian Schoolroom, a 1950's Room, WWI and WW2, toys and local history.
Schools Visits are tailored to your requirements.
We also have Schools Boxes for loan and these cover the Victorian Age, WW2, 1930-1980 Social History and Local History.
Our Curator may be able to visit your school to talk to pupils on various aspects of local history - for example we worked with Class 6 of St Joseph's on the development of Exmouth as a seaside resort. In addition to the talk we lent photographs and other material for the children to use in their Project.
Our Curator has recently worked with Exmouth Community College on their WWI Project.
For older people we have Reminiscence Boxes.
We give Presentations to local clubs on various aspects of Exmouth and also give Curator's Tours of the Museum and of historic Exmouth.
E-mail or telephone us for further details.
Our strengths
We encourage visits from schools and like to discuss the format of the visit in advance with the teachers. The age of the pupils and the syllabus are taken into account. We welcome children from aged 5 to 14, i.e. Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.
We have an experienced small team which includes former teachers.
Facilities available
We can accomodate 30 children at any one time and will split these into three groups to look at various areas of the Museum.
Children are encouraged to handle some of our objects so COME AND HANDLE A REAL DINOSAUR BONE !!!!!!
We love children (and adults too!) to ask questions and we have extensive reference books and files.
Other places to visit in the area
Schools from outside of Exmouth might wish to incorporate a visit to the Beach which is within easy walking distance.
