In 1864 Samuel Birley Rowbotham, calling himself Parallax, gave a series of lectures at the Devonport Mechanics' Institute to try and convince people that the earth was flat. He was challenged to prove it and staged an experiment on Plymouth Hoe. The Flat Earth Society exists to this day and Michael Corry from the University of the Third Age will trace its history on both sides of the Atlantic. Warning: contains maths!
