Come along to our adults only, after-hours night of entertainment exploring the world underground where species and time intermingle.
This Lates is inspired by our new exhibition Hollow Earth, a major thematic art exhibition bringing together a wide range of responses to the image and idea of the cave. It includes painting, photography, sculpture, and video, as well as objects from RAMM’s collection, from ancient history through to modern and contemporary art.

Dance along to Exmoor band CaveMouth and their fabulously gritty original sound, blending blues, funk and hip-hop liberally sprinkled with saxophone and conscious lyrics (or ‘Swamp Funk’ as the band like to call it).
Enjoy time with Professor Jamie Hampson from UofE talking about ‘the Images of power: why should we care about rock art’? Drawing on his 25 years of archaeological and anthropological fieldwork in Africa, the Americas and Australia he’ll explore what exactly some rock imagery means, the power of rock art motifs and their future. We’ll also be joined on the night by Linda Wilson from Raking Light who will talk about an exciting new project documenting the historic graffiti in Kent’s Cavern and some of the people who left their marks on the cave walls, right here in Devon.
Teacher Steve Banks will be on hand to guide you through a mindfulness session in the dark, where you will use visualisation techniques to bring on the feeling of being in a cave.
Enjoy a performance by choir MenSing who will sing a collection of songs about caves, mining and stone, inspired by the Beer Quarry Caves in East Devon, and created in collaboration with a Chilean refugee musician from a mining community. There will also be the opportunity for you to learn how to hold and play the bones, eventually being able to play along together in a group.
Learn from collage artist Agnieszka Zajac and create your own a unique and nostalgic artwork. Using words and image prompts inspired by Hollow Earth, you will work with vintage photographs and retro National Geographics to create your piece. This part of the evening needs to be booked in advance and details will be sent out in an email nearer to the time. Rock out with cave art and add your own pictures to our ‘cave wall’ as well as creating your own mini piece of rock art to take home with you.
Gilly Fox, Assistant Curator at the Hayward Gallery, will be joining us on the evening. You will have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the exhibition, led by Gilly, as well as listen to her in conversation with artist Steve Claydon, who features in Hollow Earth.
Or simply relax and catch-up with friends over a drink or a bite to eat. The Museum Café will be open and Bar Nova will be with us to provide all your beverage requirements on the night.
